How to extract frames from a GIF.

01

Upload your animated GIF

Drag and drop your GIF file or click to browse. The animation plays in the preview so you can verify it loaded correctly.

02

Extract all frames

Click Extract Frames. Each frame is decoded and saved as a lossless PNG. A 50-frame GIF takes about 1-2 seconds on a modern device.

03

Download your frames

Browse the frame grid and click any frame to download it. Use Download All to save every frame at once. Files are numbered sequentially for easy sorting.

Why extract frames from GIF animations.

Find the best thumbnail frame

Animated GIFs often have one frame that works best as a static thumbnail. Extract all frames, pick the sharpest one, and use it as your hero image or social preview. Platforms that strip GIF animation default to frame 1, which is rarely the best shot.

Edit individual animation frames

Extract frames to PNG, edit them in Photoshop or Figma (add text, adjust colors, fix artifacts), then reassemble into a new GIF or video. This frame-by-frame editing workflow gives you full control over animation content that batch editors cannot match.

Create sprite sheets for games

Game developers extract GIF frames to create sprite sheets for 2D animation. Each frame becomes one cell in the sheet. Export as PNG to preserve transparency, then arrange in a grid for your game engine. A 24-frame walk cycle GIF becomes a clean 6x4 sprite sheet.

Analyze animation timing

Designers and animators extract frames to study timing, easing, and motion arcs in reference GIFs. Viewing each frame individually reveals details that play too fast in the animation - subtle expressions, transition states, anticipation frames. Frame count also tells you the animation's duration at the GIF's frame rate.

Frequently asked questions.

How many frames can this tool extract?

On Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave), the tool uses the ImageDecoder API to extract every frame from the GIF - hundreds of frames if needed. On Firefox and Safari, the API is not available so only the first frame is extracted as a fallback. For full frame-by-frame extraction, use Chrome or Edge. A 100-frame GIF takes about 2-3 seconds to process on a modern laptop.

What format are the extracted frames saved in?

Every frame is saved as a PNG file for lossless quality. PNG preserves the exact pixel data from each GIF frame including transparency. The files are named sequentially (image-frame-1.png, image-frame-2.png, etc.) so they stay in order when sorted alphabetically. PNG files are larger than JPG but guarantee no compression artifacts on the extracted frames.

Can I extract a specific frame instead of all frames?

The tool extracts all frames at once so you can pick the ones you need. Click any individual frame in the preview grid to download just that one. If you only need the first frame as a JPG (common for thumbnails), the GIF to JPG converter is faster for that specific use case.

Does this work with transparent GIF backgrounds?

Yes. PNG supports alpha transparency, so any transparent areas in your GIF frames are preserved in the extracted PNG files. The checkered background you might see in the preview indicates transparent areas. If you need a solid white background instead, convert the extracted PNGs to JPG using the JPG converter.

Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?

No. Frame extraction runs entirely in your browser using the ImageDecoder API (Chrome/Edge) or Canvas API (Firefox/Safari). Your GIF is read into browser memory, decoded frame by frame, and each frame is exported as a PNG blob. Zero network requests during the process. Close the tab and all data is gone.

Why extract frames from a GIF?

Common reasons: creating a sprite sheet for game development, finding the best frame for a thumbnail or profile picture, analyzing animation timing, creating a stop-motion-style photo series for social media, or recovering individual images from a GIF that was the only copy. Designers extract frames to edit individual slides in Photoshop before reassembling the animation.

Can I extract frames on my phone?

Yes. On Android with Chrome, the tool extracts all frames using the ImageDecoder API. On iPhone with Safari, only the first frame is available due to API limitations. For full extraction on iOS, use Chrome for iOS (which still has the same limitation) or transfer the GIF to a desktop browser. Each extracted frame downloads as a PNG to your Files app.
