When to adjust image contrast.

Fix washed-out phone photos

Phone cameras in auto mode often produce flat, low-contrast images - especially in overcast lighting. A +30 to +50 contrast boost restores the depth and detail that your eyes saw but the camera flattened. Combine with +10 brightness if the shadows get too dark.

Prepare images for print

Printed photos always look darker and flatter than on screen because paper absorbs light while screens emit it. Boosting contrast by +15 to +25 and brightness by +10 before printing compensates for this. Inkjet printers especially benefit from the pre-adjustment.

Create moody or vintage edits

High contrast with reduced brightness gives a dramatic, moody look popular on Instagram. Low contrast with increased brightness creates the faded film aesthetic. The presets Bright + Punchy and Dark + Moody are tuned for these specific styles.

Improve scanned documents

Scanned receipts, whiteboards, and handwritten notes benefit from high contrast (+60 or more) to make text sharper against the background. This mimics the threshold filter effect but preserves more detail in gray areas. The text becomes crisp enough for OCR software to read accurately.

Frequently asked questions.

What does adjusting contrast do to an image?

Contrast controls the difference between the lightest and darkest areas of your image. Increasing contrast makes bright areas brighter and dark areas darker, which makes details pop and gives photos a punchier look. Decreasing contrast compresses the tonal range, creating a flat, muted appearance. A +50% contrast boost on a washed-out phone photo can make it look like it came from a proper camera.

How is this different from brightness adjustment?

Brightness shifts all pixels uniformly lighter or darker - like turning up a dimmer switch. Contrast changes the gap between light and dark tones without necessarily shifting the overall brightness. That is why the tool has both sliders: you might need +30 contrast to add punch, then -10 brightness to compensate for the slight lightening that contrast adds to highlights.

What presets are available?

Six presets cover common adjustments: Reset (both at zero), High Contrast (+50% contrast), Low Contrast (-30%), Bright + Punchy (+25 contrast and +15 brightness), Dark + Moody (+20 contrast and -20 brightness), and Washed Out (-20 contrast and +30 brightness). Click any preset and the preview updates instantly. Fine-tune with the sliders after selecting a starting point.

Does this reduce image quality?

The contrast and brightness changes are applied using the CSS filter property on a Canvas element, which operates at full resolution. If you export as PNG, the result is lossless. If you export as JPG, the encoder applies compression at your chosen quality level (default 92%). The adjustment itself does not degrade the image - only the JPG encoding step introduces compression. For maximum quality, use PNG output.

Can I adjust contrast on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android). Upload a photo, drag the contrast and brightness sliders, and download. The real-time preview works on mobile with full touch support. Processing runs on your device so it works on any connection speed.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The entire adjustment runs in your browser using the Canvas API and CSS filters. Your image is read from your device, processed locally, and downloaded directly. Open the Network tab in browser dev tools (F12) while using the tool to verify zero outgoing file requests.

What image formats are supported?

The tool accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP files. Output format matches the input - JPG input produces a JPG download, PNG input produces PNG. There is no file size limit beyond your browser memory. A 30 MP photo from a modern phone (around 8000x4000 pixels) processes without issues on most devices.
