Why Split Image Tiles End Up Uneven (and How to Fix It)
Remainder pixels make grid tiles unequal when width does not divide cleanly. Covers floor-division math, Instagram 3:4 profile crops, JPG vs PNG export, and browser splitting without an upload.
Most "uneven tile" complaints are not a buggy splitter. They are leftover pixels. Tile width is floor(imageWidth / columns). Tile height is floor(imageHeight / rows). Anything left over on the right or bottom edge is dropped so every tile matches. A 1919px-wide image into 3 columns yields 639px tiles and throws away 2px. That is intentional, not random.
Run the math before you export
On a 1920x1080 source:
- 2x2 → 960x540 (exact)
- 3x3 → 640x360 (exact)
- 3 columns on 1919px width → 639px tiles, 2px discarded
If those discarded pixels sit on a logo, product edge, or UI chrome, crop or resize first so both axes divide cleanly. For a 3x3 puzzle, a source whose width and height are multiples of 3 (for example 3000x3000, or a 3:4 canvas like 3240x4320) avoids edge loss.
Instagram puzzles: stop assuming square
Older tutorials still say "crop to square, then 3x3." That advice is stale. Instagram's profile grid now shows previews in a 3:4 ratio, not square. Square uploads still work in the feed, but the grid crops top and bottom. A square 3x3 puzzle will look slightly wrong in the profile mosaic even when the tiles align with each other.
Build the source at 3:4, split 3x3, and post bottom-right tile first (newest post lands top-left). Feed-friendly tile targets land around 1080x1440 when the master file is large enough.
Where equal grids help (and where they do not)
Print panels and vinyl wraps often need a wide mural cut into abutting sheets - a 2x1 or 1x3 split keeps each panel under the printer's max width. Game and puzzle assets need identical tile dimensions. A 4x4 of a square source beats freehand cropping sixteen times.
Subject-focused creative crops are a different job. Use a crop tool for rule-of-thirds cutouts. Grid splitters assume every tile shares the same width and height.
JPG vs PNG for the tiles
Photographs should leave as JPG. At about 92% quality, one re-encode after splitting is rarely visible at social sizes. Screenshots, diagrams, and text should leave as PNG - JPG softens edges and rings around letters. Transparent PNGs must stay PNG or alpha becomes solid white.
PNG keeps transparency and is lossless. JPG is lossy and has no alpha channel. "Same as input" is the safe default when you only want the spatial cut.
Split in the browser
The Image Splitter runs on your device. Drop a JPG, PNG, or WebP, set rows/columns (or tap 2x2 / 3x3 / 4x4), pick format, then Split. Preview overlays show the grid before you commit nine downloads you do not need.
Mistakes that waste an afternoon
5x5 on a phone photo
Twenty-five tiles under ~400px each kill fine detail. For social carousels, 2x2 and 3x3 cover almost every real case.
Splitting an already crushed JPG
A source saved at 60% quality, then split and re-saved as JPG, stacks artifacts. Prefer the camera or export original, split once, compress only if upload limits force it.
Confusing frame extraction with grid splitting
Pulling GIF frames is a timeline job. Cutting a still into tiles is geometry. Use GIF Frame Extractor for frames and Image Splitter for tiles.
Frequently asked questions
What grid size works best for an Instagram profile puzzle?
Use a 3x3 cut on a 3:4 source so each tile matches the profile grid thumbnail ratio. The profile grid displays previews at 3:4, not square - a square 3x3 will get top and bottom cropped in the grid. For full-resolution posts, start from a large 3:4 canvas (for example 3240x4320) so each tile lands near 1080x1440.
Why are my split tiles slightly different sizes?
Width and height rarely divide evenly. A 1920px width into 3 columns is 640px exact. A 1919px width becomes floor(1919/3) = 639px tiles, with 2px discarded from the right edge. Crop or resize to a divisible size first if you need zero edge loss.
Should I export split tiles as JPG or PNG?
JPG at 90-95% works for photos and typically saves 40-70% vs PNG. Use PNG for text, UI screenshots, or transparency - JPG adds ringing on hard edges and cannot keep an alpha channel.
Can I split an animated GIF into a grid?
Grid splitters cut one still frame spatially. Convert or extract a frame first, then split. For every chronological frame as its own file, use a GIF frame extractor instead of a grid splitter.
